Democratic representative, Vice President and President following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 in Johnson’s home state of Texas. Known as ‘LBJ’ he was elected in his own right in 1964 and proceeded to create a liberal, ‘Great Society’ in the US passing the Civil Rights bill among legislation to reduce poverty. Controversy followed his supporting a war in Vietnam, and sending in troops during the period of Urban Riots. Johnson argued it was possible to have both ‘guns and butter’.
