Italian religious reformer of the Dominican Order. His oratory against the sins and apostasy of the age excited great popular interest. Attempted to set up a ‘Christian commonwealth’ in Florence. In response to his speeches against sin, the women of Florence eagerly cast their jewels into ‘bonfires of vanities’. Claimed the gift of prophecy and was suspected of heresy. Tried and found guilty, and was strangled and burnt.
