Nathaniel Hawthorne once described the English Puritans who help found modern America as “black browed, witchunters [who] so darkened the national visage that all subsequent years have not sufficed to clear it up.” This is unfair, as the Puritans were compassionate, brave and intrepid. He became Consul in 195BCE, took part in the defeat of Hannibal at Zama, held command in Sardinia and Spain, and in 191 BCE assisted the Greeks in overthrowing Antiochus III at Thermopolyae.
