American soldier. He volunteered for the Continental Army shortly after the commencement of the War of Independence. During the Battle of Long Island he operated behind enemy lines as a spy, but was caught and hanged for espionage by British forces. His purported final words were regret that ‘I have only one life to give for my country’.

Roman statesman, soldier and writer of virtue, simplicity and wisdom. He condemned the luxury of his time and was nicknamed “the censor”. He became Consul in 195BCE, took part in the defeat of Hannibal at Zama, held command in Sardinia and Spain, and in 191 BCE assisted the Greeks in overthrowing Antiochus III at Thermopolyae.
