A pioneer in the art of film direction, Méliès created the basic elements of special effects and built the first glass studio that was widely used during the silent film era. A magician by training, he made over 500 films, his most famous being Voyage to the Moon (1902). Unable to keep up with the changing demands of the industry, he lived his later life in obscurity and poverty.

Roman statesman, soldier and writer of virtue, simplicity and wisdom. He condemned the luxury of his time and was nicknamed “the censor”. He became Consul in 195BCE, took part in the defeat of Hannibal at Zama, held command in Sardinia and Spain, and in 191 BCE assisted the Greeks in overthrowing Antiochus III at Thermopolyae.
