American writer. Born into slavery, Brown escaped and educated himself eventually settling in Boston to become a writer. His autobiography, Narrative of William W. Brown, A Fugitive Slave was a popular narrative on abolition and slavery. His only novel Clotel about the descendants of Thomas Jefferson and a slave is the first novel ever published by an African American.

Roman statesman, soldier and writer of virtue, simplicity and wisdom. He condemned the luxury of his time and was nicknamed “the censor”. He became Consul in 195BCE, took part in the defeat of Hannibal at Zama, held command in Sardinia and Spain, and in 191 BCE assisted the Greeks in overthrowing Antiochus III at Thermopolyae.
