If the United States had not dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki early in August 1945, thus causing Japan to surrender, the Second World War in the Pacific would have gone on for years longer, with hundreds of thousands of casualties, as the Japanese fought to the death against invading US and Allied forces.
