Roman Emperor. The cousin and adopted son of Heliogabalus, whom he succeeded, Severus ruled from 221. A poor ruler, he was often controlled by others, principally his mother, and failed to control Rome’s military. He was eventually murdered by mutinous troops during a campaign in Germany.
