American statesman. After an early career on the frontier, including as Governor of Indiana territory, he served in the War of 1812, which saw the defeat of the British at the Battle of the Thames. In 1816 he was elected to Congress, becoming a senator in 1824. He was elected president in 1841, but died of pneumonia a month after his inauguration.
