991 – English forces, led by Byrhtnoth Ealdorman, are defeated by raiding Vikings near Maldon, Essex.
1628 – Swedish warship Vasa sinks in Stockholm harbour after sailing around a kilometre of her maiden voyage. Richly decorated and intended to be a symbol of the Swedish Empire, she was dangerously unstable, with too much weight in the upper structure of the hull.
